Each print also comes with an excerpt from Robert’s novel The Forgotten Voyage of H.M.S. Baci. A fantastic saga in which multiple generations of the Roberts’ family explore the seven seas in search of the world’s mermaid and merman population. Thus, you receive the passage from Robert’s novel describing the particular event in which the character(s) in the print were sighted. The following is the excerpt written for the Sea Maiden 22 Ursala and Sea Baby print:

Trouble in paradise and not a lump of coal to be had! The wheels of the financial ruin planned for Edmund C. Roberts had at last begun to turn. Of the two undiscovered stowaways, the one planning monetary mischief (this would not be the stowaway bent on torture and murder with the aid of voodoo), had finally gained access to the ship’s wireless station and communicated with Roberts’ trust administrators, convincing them he was indeed Roberts, and that a breach of security had been discovered and consequently he (Roberts), would most definitely not wish for any further funds to advance him until he had dealt with the matter. In the meantime, the counterfeit Roberts advised, all messages from him would henceforth begin with the code word, “pilfer”, in that way altering his principals that it was the real Edmund C. Roberts making any requests.

The first problem arose when the Baci Finale steamed back to the coaling station in San Francisco. The good ship was in desperate need of coal, as they had run down past their reserves in recent weeks because Roberts’ Sea Turtle tangent. And so when they were asked to vacate the docks, Roberts was beyond anger. “Good Lord, man, what do you mean, ‘My credit is not good here?’ My credit, I will inform you, is good anywhere in the world. Anywhere. At any time. There must be some regrettable mistake. Please redo whatever it was that you did in the first place. There has obviously been an error. Perhaps if you would enlist a little competence we might proceed.” The station master would have none of it. “You have no credit and your ship, sir, is now trespassing. Have your captain vacate this dock immediately or I’ll have you arrested and your vessel impounded. Do I make myself clear?”

Roberts sputtered off, regained the Baci and was doubly vexed when once again he was unable to speak directly with his captain. (He had not seen him once since he has departed on his voyage, despite every effort he had made. The ship’s first officer had waylaid him at every turn). The long and short of it is, the ship was moved and Roberts had the turbine launch roused so that he might dissipate his anger. He roared out of the harbor and up the coast, fortune bringing him to a secluded bay where he chanced upon a Sea Maiden with her baby. He’d allowed the triplets and his naturalist, Dr. Marie Gebeaux to accompany him, and that proved to be unfortunate. All five of them gazed across the water at the Sea Maiden and her child, and all five thought of their own mothers and their respective abandonment. It was a very gloomy group that returned to the ship later that day.

Roberts’ notebook reads:
Is there no end to the taunting? Spied our 22nd Sea Maiden in the company of her child. A moving scene. Quite touching, really. That is, if one had not, as a child, been discarded by his own mother!
Sea Maiden 22 “Ursala” Sea Baby 2
April 2, 1913

Each print also comes with an excerpt from Robert’s novel The Forgotten Voyage of H.M.S. Baci. A fantastic saga in which multiple generations of the Roberts’ family explore the seven seas in search of the world’s mermaid and merman population. Thus, you receive the passage from Robert’s novel describing the particular event in which the character(s) in the print were sighted. The following is the excerpt written for the Sea Maiden 2 Beatrice print:

Sir Edmund Roberts’s circumnavigation in pursuit of Sea Maidens continued with enhanced enthusiasm after the first sighting. The voyage’s misfortunes accumulated with at least as much vigor. Hobbs, the crewman who had the first Sea Maiden sighting predictably deserted to foster closer contact with her. Young Billy, the captain’s cabin boy and reported to be enamored of Hobbs, also failed to return to the ship.

To the HMS Baci’s captain’s chagrin and disgust, a quasi-giddiness infected the crew. Suspecting tom-foolery with the rum casks, he threatened to halve the daily ration. Sir Edmund attributed the crew’s behavior to “Sea Maiden Fever” and sought to further enhance it by what he called a dramatic and significant gesture. He offered a gold piece to the sailor who sighted the next Sea Maiden and underscored the challenge by nailing said gold piece to the main mast.

Sir Edmund’s reporting of what followed is at least as telling as the event itself. Captain Fitzwillies’s horror turned to rage as Roberts hammered a rusty spike into his pristine mast. All accounts but Sir Edmund’s relate that Captain Fitzwillie trembled then reddened, then drew himself up to his full five feet, clutched Roberts by the throat, lifted him from the deck and commanded in his foul-weather voice that if Mr. Roberts ever defaced his vessel again, he would leave have him flogged, keel hauled, personally thrashed and set adrift in an provisioned and leaking boat.

The following week, a Sea Maiden was sighted, ending Roberts bout of cabin sulking. Sir Edmund’s journal entry reads:

Wondrous news! We have identified our second Sea Maiden! Previous events were indeed harbingers of good fortune. In a masterful stroke of enlightened manipulation, I offered a reward for our next sighting. While Captain Fitzwillie managed to disguise his enthusiasm, I am certain he is merely reticent to appear over-zealous before his crew.

Without indulging in feminine pique, I must note that our captain is disposed to melancholy. Could it be because he regrets shipping Mrs. Fitzwillie, the infamous Constance Daphne, as his passage mate? The crew resents all 30 stone of her. She blocks passageways. Cleanliness is not her hand maiden.

Alas, perfection is but a myth. I am pleased with our voyage.

Maidenus Splendidus

“Beatrice”

April 6, 1832

St. John’s Rock

Another nocturnal sighting. Appeared “mesmerized” and unaware of our observations. I begin to suspect female vapors afflict Sea Maidens. Medium height. Medium weight. Dark hair.

Thus, you receive the passage from Robert’s novel describing the particular event in which the character(s) in the print were sighted. The following is the excerpt written for the Sea Maiden 37 Kim print:

And finally, to the Japan Isles and the orient! Spring was glorious for all of its patent reasons and more. Sir Edmund and Captain Constance Fitzwillie revealed in marital satisfaction, the missing ingredient of secrecy more than offset by the intimacy they now shared on demand. And of course Sir Edmund still spent the early portion of his evenings in his old quarters (his “new” study) where he could access solitude he coveted and continue his nightly invasion of he Captain’s own privacy through his augured vista. Such was their relationship that she too found it titillating, her nightly performances in many ways more arousing than those she had conjured before she was aware that his secret was not. More than a few times the naturalist visited his interest on Constance Daphne before the final curtain, and those times she laughed well and often at his inability to practice patience.

At one of the outlying islands Captain Constance Daphne brought the ship in for a watering party to be sent ashore. Sir Edmund and Gnarly Dan accompanied the sailors, the former bent on exploring and anxious to access the Sea Maiden population of the Far East, the naturalist postulating that their features would sure have a minimum reflection of the orient.

Their first encounter was not with Sea Maiden fauna. At a remote beach they came upon a straw and thatch hut, its apparent owner at its door and deep in meditation. After much gesticulating it became apparent that he was a samurai (and a very tall one at that!), no longer needed by any warlords because of his age. At the naturist’s urging he unpacked and displayed the finest suit of armor Sir Edmund had ever seen. Much of it was covered in silk, that which was metal displaying fierce dragons or chrysanthemums, or long legged cranes. The helmet was most impressive, a fine golden and fierce dragon adorning it.

Gnarly Dan, allowed that perhaps the gentleman might enjoy seeing the naturalist’s uniform, he as most of the crew, being most smitten with it at Sir Edmunds wedding. So off the old salt went and returned some hours later with two crew members lugging the naturalist’s campaign chest. The samurai seemed to enjoy the bright colors, the insignias and the tan sun Helmet. It was with unmasked reverence that he handled the naturalist’s medals, particularly the Order of Bath. The samurai (Toshiro was his name) then brought out his blades and allowed Gnarly Dan and Sir Edmund to marvel at their quality and the keenness of their edges. And so the afternoon passed accompanied by much knee slapping and camaraderie, the men exchanging pidgin tales of past battles. With the setting sun the two warriors, much moved by the other’s sincerity and goodwill offered up his own ancient uniform in trade for the other’s. And so, when they partied, most of the orients armor tied atop Sir Edmund campaign chest, it was with wonderfully felt good will and newfound affection. Additionally, the samurai informed the naturalist of a nearby cove where a coy and definitively oriental Sea Maiden appeared with the first rays of the morning sun. So they returned to the Bacis, spread the armor out on Sir Edmund’s day bed and agreed to seek the Sea Maiden with the new day.

The beach was as the samurai described it, and as predicted, the first rays of the sun illuminated a glorious, dark haired Sea Maiden. She was diminutive, remarkably light skinned (almost pure white…alabaster) with a colorful tail. Naturalist and sailor (Gnarly Dan was present) watched her for some time, Sir Edmund curious that the old salt made no move to join her as he had mouths before on the Aleutian Islands. “You don’t seem disposed to strike up a friendship with this lass,” he quietly taunted the sailor. Gnarly Dan looked with disgust at the naturalist.

“Ya know, sir,” he began “there ain’t one gob inna fleetful what has the sense ta know when a woman fancies him.” He stared at Sir Edmund, communicating that the naturalist was obviously not that one. “Most of ya simply busts in with yer fine words er fast hands. It would help ya boatloads ta unnerstan’ that yer female ain’t lookin’ ta be tacked. Most often she’d dio a little captainin’ her ownself.” Hew was quite for an unusual moment and concluded confidentially, “Ya might keep that in mind when yer settin’ a course fer our Cap.”

Sir Edmunds Journal reads:

Encountered a brave warrior. He directed us to our 37th Sea Maiden. She was most definitely of Eastern influence in stature, features and coloration.

Maidensu orientus

“Kim”

Sort stature. Black Hair. White complexion.

Sighted on Kuchino Shima Island

April 1, 1835

Hand labeled and signed by Robert in pencil, all the prints come with a 1/4″ foam backing and the 5″ x 7″, 8″ x 10″, 11″ x 14″ are matted so all you need is a frame and they are ready to hang on your wall! The following is the excerpt written for the Sea Maiden 35 Isabel print:

The Sandwich Islands now far astern, HMS Baci set a course for her next destination, that being north to the Aleutian Islands. Cold weather dogged them, along with gales and squalls. Gnarly Dan assured tSir Edmund that multitudinous Sea Maidens should be in the offering, it being the season for (of course) their ‘northing’, as he put it.

“And they will be all-healthy-like’ and rotund?” the naturalist teased. Gnarly Dan missed the humor, he now lost in the vision of soft Sea Maidens. He signed and closed his eyes. “Me second wife; the lass in India; she’d be soft as yer puppy,” he informed the totally disinterested naturalist. “When she lays back onna bed, a gob can be sire he’s gonna roll right to ‘er; inna dark even!” Sir Edmund closed his eyes in an attempt to block the encroaching vision of Gnarly Dan and a substantial bride. No sooner did he accomplish that when a score of rotund children sailed into view clamoring for their father, The naturalist retreated to his cabin.

At last “Land ho!” and they were amongst the Aleutians, their sparse, scrubby, rocky coasts as uninviting as any the naturalist had encountered. Unalaska Island lay before them, and near Cape Aiak the Baci anchored and on Christmas Day sent the captain’s launch in with a small party to explore the area and hopefully sight a Sea Maiden or two. It was a treacherous stretch of coast near Cape Izigan that the naturalist not only saw hundreds of sea lions, but also scores of sea otters. As they watched and Gnarly Dan provided a running commentary on sea otter fur, a Sea Maiden pulled herself onto a rocky outcrop nearby and turned to face an unusual burst of sunlight. She was substantial, pleasing Gnarly Dan to the point of breathlessness. “Lord help a poor gob,” he gasped, “ain’t she uncommon beautiful!”

Sir Edmund Agreed politely. “Yes my friend Mr. Dan, she is uncommon beautiful’; and it appears life has denied her a few opportunities to feast.” Gnarly Dan ran his thick tongue over his chapped lips and then raised the arm of his sea coat and wiped away the moisture. “I knows you’d be a true gent,” he began, “but ya got ta know, yer honor, a man ain’t truly know’d a woman till he lays into yer softer sort. Nary a bone ta scape against an’ it’ be all “thank ya sir’ from beginning’ ta the end of the voyage.”

Sir Edmund knew the old salt was unstoppable, but still he tried. “Yes, yes, I’ve heard it all before.” But, of course, it was to no avail.

“Ya see, sir, yer bigger woman (or Sea Maiden fer that matter) is all comfeble-like, so’s ever one’s happy. She ain’t gonna get all squashed er jammed by a bloke like a skinny women does. A gob ain’t gonna hear no ‘Ow!” er, ‘Careful there!’ No, she’ll jest lie back an’ savor the trip, if ya catches my drift.” At this point Gnarly Dan realized the naturalist had lowered himself and was now crawling off toward the Sea Maiden, attempting to keep his profile as low as possible. “So you’d be sneakin’ up on her, would ya?” the old salt called out through cupped hands. Sir Edmund glared over his shoulder at gnarly Dan, whereupon the sailor strode right up to and then by the naturalist, climbing over boulders as he did, making absolutely no attempt to conceal his presence. The Sea Maiden turned, saw the old salt and smiled coyly.

Sir Edmund sat upright and watched, his mouth agape. Gnarly Dan at last gained the same rock as the Sea Maiden and then walked to her and sat, as boldly as ‘kiss my hand’! They seemed to chat for some time, although the old salt would explain what was communicated or how it was accomplished, allowing Sir Edmund only the simple statement, “I believes I’ll be seein’ her later.”

In point of fact Gnarly Dan chose to spend the night on the island, the Christmas celebration on the Baci notwithstanding. “Spect I’ll have a small party a me own,” he informed the naturalist as he once again wet his lips. He produced a bright trinket from his pocket and admired it briefly. “Ain’t a woman alive what don’ ‘preciate a gift!” he added and turned and walked from the group, he humming as he departed. When the old salt returned to the Baci the following morning his face fairly glowed.

“You must have frozen last night!” Sir Edmund exclaimed as Gnarly Dan stepped onto the deck. The old salt smiled warmly. “Squire, ya ain’t been warm till ya lies in the arms a yer bigger women. They loves an’ they loves, and they true enough knows how ta please a man.”” He thought a moment, smiling dreamily and added, “An’ most ‘portant, they wants ta please they man. That’d be the best gift ever!”

The naturalist journal reads:

Sighted our 35th Sea Maiden on the island of Unilaska. She was quite unafraid as my companion strode to her side and appeared to converse with her, though that would of course have been impossible.

Maidenus rotunda

“Isabel”

Remarkably beautiful. Full figured. Long dark hair.

December 25, 1834 (Merry Christmas, indeed!)

Thus, you receive the passage from Robert’s novel describing the particular event in which the character(s) in the print were sighted. The following is the excerpt written for the Sea Maiden 33 Glory print:

Sir Edmund Roberts, explorer and Sea Maiden quester continued his search, sailing to Pitcairn Island. One evening Captain Constance Daphne Fitzwillie startled the naturalist with a question. “May I tell you something in strictest confidence?” she asked. Sir Edmund laughed quietly. “And with whom do you fear I would share your secret? Our good friend Dan?”

Not ten feet away and secreted in the reefed sail on the spanker boom above them, Gnarly Dan frowned with wounded feelings.

The captain continued, “These many months since my husband’s departure I have reframed from violating the sanctity of his personal possessions, save his old uniforms. Only recently have I looked into his journal and official papers and what I found was rather a shock.” Sir Edmund could not imagine what could possibly have been written that would discommode Constance Daphne. She told him. “The little worm researched and verified a captain’s legal right to initiate divorce action while both parties are at sea. Further, the scoundrel had the audacity to add his signature. With a flourish!”

“The cad,” Sir Edmund answered because he felt a response was expected, when in fact his mind was racing forward with other possibilities. “And so,…” he began. “They are wanting only my signature,” the captain added expectantly.

A long silence ensued. Time dragged. The sun came from behind a cloud. “Sign them!” the naturalist exclaimed sat last with unfeigned excitement.

Constance Daphne looked into the naturalist eyes, seeking the depth of his distinct scientific soul. Apparently satisfied, she smiled and whispered, “I already did.”

It was without a doubt the finest news the naturalist had received since his nomination for the British Society of Very Honored Naturalist (he was subsequently drummed from it’s ranks for his paper on fairies and goblins).

They both felt a tremendous pull as their bodies ached and their minds raced. Sir Edmund asked the unimaginable. “Do you believe you now have the sufficient authority to perform a marriage?” It was out. It was said. There could be no retraction and no doubt as to the true implications of his query. A warm wind came over the Baci’s starboard quarter and caressed them. The good ship Baci heeled over an addition strake. “I do,” the beautiful captain whispered. It was answered. They both smiled.

They raised land the next day and Sir Edmund immediately descended in Halley’s patented diving apparatus. A Sea Maiden swam beneath, her dark hair trailing, her broad tail making long, powerful thrusts. Then as quickly as she appeared, she was gone.

“I say she was in a bit of a rush; a Sea Master in pursuit?” Sir Edmund quipped. Gnarly Dan ignored humor. “We’s dicussin’ under sea folks, yer honor, not us. Likely they’s a Sea Master all lonely-like nearby. Ya see, if she ain’t inna mood there ain’t no Sea Master what’d be so bold as ta chase her. He waits. When she gives the nod, why that’ll be different. Ever’ problem I ever had with a woman was ‘cause I shoulda waited a might longer. We could learn from watchin’ yer Sea Master.

Sir Edmonds journal reads:

Maidenous urgenus

“Gloria”

Long hair. Well formed body. Medium height. Medium weight.

Sighted near Pitcairn Island

July 18, 1834

A fantastic saga in which multiple generations of the Roberts’ family explore the seven seas in search of the world’s mermaid and merman population. Thus, you receive the passage from Robert’s novel describing the particular event in which the character(s) in the print were sighted. The following is the excerpt written for the Sea Maiden 32 Fanny and Sea Master Surraendus print:

Sir Edmund Roberts, explorer extraordinaire and charterer of the good ship, HMS Baci, continued his cataloging of the world’s Sea Maiden population. Just prior to departing the Easter Island complex the naturalist, in the company of the old salt, Gnarly Dan, spied his thirty second Sea Maiden and his eight Sea Master. Gnarly Dan, the font of Sea Maiden lore and source of more words than the average individual hears in ten lifetimes, explained the situation, though much affected by the drama before them. He swabbed a salty tear from his bristled cheek, snuffed loudly and whispered, “This’d be better luck than the time me second wife’s three sisters needed consolin’ when they favorite cat was trampled by a coach ‘n four. Warn’t one of ‘em much to look at, the squashed cat ‘cluded, but they tears turned to huggin’ an’ such, an’ well, afore I know’d it, we was sailin’ ‘fer heaven in a crowded boat.”

Sir Edmund glared heavily toward the old salt and hissed, “I do not give a hang about any of your multitudinous wives, their sisters, pets or predilections for unsavory unions. If you have information regarding the couple before us, do tell; otherwise, please keep that ever-moving mouth of your shut before I throttle you.”

Old Gnarly Dan feigned a deep psychological wound and then continued, “ As I was ‘a sayin’ before yer honor got testy,: That’d be wondrous good luck we’d be spin’. Firstly: A Sea Master finds himself alyin’ on the beach fer but one reason, and that’d be if he’s give up on findin’ his love. Secondly: Yer Sea Maiden saws her hair off when she’s grieven’ fer a lost love. Onst she does that, she rips the page involvin’ love from her chart book. She’ll nary love again. Think’ a’ chance a’ what we sees happenin’.”

He turned to Sir Edmund triumphant.

The naturalist shook his head in an attempt to clear his consternation. “My good fellow, you make absolutely no sense.

Gnarly Dan passed a sign of patience and began again. “Yer Sea Master there obviously got lost somehow; maybe a storm; a hurricane, perhaps, blowed him far away. He’s struggled back after a powerful lot a swimmin’. Now yer Sea Maiden was his girl, if ya catch me drift. She musta thought he copped it; drown or got eat by a giant squid, ‘cause she chopped ‘er hair nearly clean off, an yer Sea Maiden won’t do nothin’ that capital ‘less she’s powerful sad.”

Sir Edmund did finally understand and when he went to acknowledge Gnarly Dan’s wisdom, he stopped for the old salt was again lost in reverie. “Gave that cat a right nice send off. Headstone an’ all. Was that grateful.”

Sir Edmund’s notebook reads:

Maidenus gratitudus

“Fanny”

Maximus surrendus

Sighted in the throes of a homecoming.

The following is the excerpt written for the Sea Maiden 27 Anna “Aft” print:

Confusion and mayhem, the handmaidens of Sir Edmund Roberts, make an appearance high in the Andes mountains of Gran Columbia. As usual, it was left to Sir Edmund Roberts to recover; which he did. Key to his success was the remarkable beauty of the golden maiden he had brought up from the cold depths of Lake Guantavita. Remarkable beauty and her haunting resemblance first to Captain Constance Daphne Fitzwillie; for she shared her glorious figure, this inspiring the remaining crew. But most impressively, she had facial features uncomfortably and closely related to one of the Indian guides who had returned to the naturalist’s camp after Nasty Natalie (Naughty Natalie?) the pirates and the bulk of the crew had departed with the lake’s golden treasure. To a man the Columbians fell to their knees when they saw her.

After lengthy but halting translation came to be known she was El Maideno Revierdo, the revered maiden, the last sacrifice of the doomed Inca civilization before they succumbed to the treachery and avarice of the Spaniards. She was the most beautiful in the land, the daughter of the greatest chief and every bit as sacred to the survivors of the proud race as the sun god himself.

And where less than 50 Indians helped the Bacis into the lofty mountains originally, now hundreds flocked to view their lost princess. With great and wise fanfare Sir Edmund Roberts liberated her ancient remains from the gilt sarcophagus after which reverent celebration gave way to gratitude for her recovery. Sir Edmund, Constance Daphne, Gnarly Dan and the few Bacis left were fairly spirited by the throng from the high mountains to the coast once more.

All were astonished at the rapidity of their return to the sea until they deduced their original ascent had been circuitous in the extreme; the guides leading the explorers in cruel circles, traversed the highest and most dangerous peaks. But now, steeped in gratitude they took the old Inca highway through the passes and valleys, returning to the ship well in advance of the pirates and the treasure; early enough to prepare a surprise!

But a battle was not to be, for it was only the lost Bacis, depressed, defeated and hang dog, who finally stumbled out of the jungle. They had attempted an attack on the pirates but were soundly drubbed, unable to retake the treasure and lucky to keep their own skins intact. All they brought was the sad news that the pirates had turned inland and due west, bent on a rendezvous at the Orinoco river.

And so, reunited, the Bacis set sail once more, finally and truly intent on carrying Sir Edmund to the Galapagos Islands. Becalmed en passage, they rousted the diving bell and Sir Edmund sighted his 27th Sea Maiden.

His journal reads:
“Most awesome sight!” We sighted a profoundly healthy specimen drifting by the bell, stretching and preening for what seemed like hours. Gnarly Dan noted (who could stop him?) that her excessive and obvious lung capacity allowed her prolonged time sub aquatic. Says he, “Any maid what has a chest like that ain’t in no hurry; anything she wants’ll likely come her way if she be patient.

The following is the excerpt written for the Sea Maiden 27 Anna “Fore” print:
